To look "Red Carpet" glamourous on the big night, take your cues from your favorite stars and celebs. Last week we talked about the appropriate accessories for your gown or dress, (like shoes, jewels, bags, etc.), so to finish up our series for 2008, we'll discuss helpful hair hints, and marvelous makeup tips to avoid a meltdown.

Just like with accessories, less is more when it comes to hair and makeup. They should complement each other as well as you and your dress. If your dress is a really bright color or a busy print, tone down your make-up a notch. If your dress is pale, then your make-up should make more of a statement. As you see from the photos below, blondes or brunettes can look equally attractive with more vibrant colors, or more natural tones.

Remember to pick up a main attraction, highlight either your eyes or your mouth, not both. And please do not pile on the foundation. Play up your natural skin tone, or use a light bronzer, and blend, blend, blend the blush with a brush. Get your eyebrows waxed a few days prior. If you are not confident to do your own make-up or hair, ask a friend, or make a salon appointment. Which brings me to the next subject: NEVER GO TO A SALON WITHOUT A PHOTO of the hairdo you want. You may say soft curls, and be thinking sexy bedhead, but the stylist sends you out of the salon looking like Scarlett O'Hara from Gone With The Wind.

To hunt for hair photos you must make the big decision first: Up or down, curley or straight!!??! Here is the general guide when deciding whether or not to do an "up-do". If your gown has a very interesting back treatment with criss crossed or jeweled straps, then by all means have your hair up so people can appreciate the low back. Halters have a neckline that looks best if the hair is half up in the front and down in the back, or swept to the side.
This look works well with a sweetheart neckline as well because it is so romantic. If your dress is strapless, or has spaghetti straps, either up or down will do, curly or straight. But for the most impact, make sure that which ever way you go, your hair looks different on Prom night from how you wear your hair to school every day. If it's always clipped up, or in a ponytail, then wear it down. If it's always down then wear it up. If it's straight as a board then curl it, or vice versa.
Remember that even a classic hairdo, whether up or down could use some sparkle, so don't be afraid to add a twinkle to those tresses with a sparkling barette, headband, or clip. Braids and extensions don't have to be expensive, and can make a huge difference as well.It doesn't hurt to try out your Prom look ahead of time, practice new make-up tips, or your hairdo. Just like we suggested you try on your gown along with the accessories, try out your total look in front of the mirror as well. Now all you have to do is decide which nail polish and fragrance to use!!!!!

3 - 4 Week Countdown To Prom

Now that Spring Break is over, and you have taken care of the BIG Prom items like the dress, shoes, and accessories, let's turn our attention to the LITTLE things that count as well.

1)You need to try on your gown with the undergarments you are planning to wear on the big night. Be sure there are no panty lines or bra straps showing. Treat yourself to a pair of Spanx for a smooth line around the derriere. Buy a Nu-Bra if your cleavage needs a boost. If your dress is white, and see through in front of the mirror, you will need to get a slip.

2)With your shoes on, check the hem of your gown, you don't want to be tripping all night long. Make an appointment ASAP if you need to get it hemmed, also if you need minor adjustments on the straps of your gown, etc. Check if you need to get the wrinkles steamed out of your gown.

3)Make your salon appointments. Remember your eyebrows and facial should be done at least two or three days ahead, ditto for spraytans. Mani/pedi can be the day before, or the day of Prom, early in the morning. Don't schedule your hair or makeup befor 12 noon, or you will be wilted by 6pm! Ideally, get your hair done first, then the make-up. Remember the best salons get booked way ahead of time, so don't wait!!!!!

4)Go with your date to order your flowers, check up on your transportation, and make those plans for the pre party and after party.
If you will need dinner reservations, now is the time to book a table.

5)Planning is everything, you want to be relaxed. So be sure to schedule some beauty sleep the day before. Make sure your camera works, or go buy that disposable. Pack your purse up the day before as well, and set all your jewelry out, with your shoes, lingerie, etc.

Accessable Accessories for Prom

Now that Prom is one month away, hopefully you have the "date", the "driver", the "dinner", and the "dress", squared away! Now let's turn our attention to accessories, and next week, we'll look at hair and make-up to complement our attire and style.

Generally the saying "less is more" holds true for Prom. The rule is as follows: If your dress is plain add bling, if your dress has bling, remember you are not a Christmas tree. Take your cue from Jennifer Anniston and Jennifer Garner. Generally, if the dress is plain add silver jewels for cool colors, and gold for warm. Otherwise, match the beading or embroidery on the fabric of your gown, and add silver or gold accordingly. In some instances, jet jewelry can be very sophisticated with black, or black & white combinations. Generally necklaces have fallen by the wayside in the last year or so, with most stars opting for fancy earrings and perhaps a bracelet or two.

Remember your handbag and shoe count as "bling" as well. The rule here is the shoe should match the beading on your dress: gold with gold, silver with silver. If your dress is plain, follow the jewelry rule, everything has to co-ordinate. If perhaps your gown is two-tone in color, say black & white, then match the hem. Speaking of hems, when shortening your gown, always bring the shoe you are going to wear to the seamstress, so the length will be correct. Remember to wear fancier shoes with assymetrical hems, and slit skirt gowns, as the shoes will be seen. Ankle strap shoes with rhinestone trim are best here. Pumps, & slingbacks, work well with more sophisticated gowns, and strappy sandals are perfect for sexier fare. T-straps happen to be hot right now.

The handbag should match your shoe, and/or jewelry, or have fun and match the color of your gown if it is lime, or red, or orange for instance. Handbags need to be functional, but not too large, a pouch or envelope will suffice. If it has a hidden strap, all the better when you are carrying drinks, or taking photos.

By now you've all seen the Academy Awards, and realize that RED is not just for Valentine's Day any more! When you wear red, it's warm and inviting on Brunettes, hot and exciting on Blondes. If you still have not purchased your Prom dress or gown, consider red as a color choice.
And on a daily basis on't be afraid to accessorize with red either, it perks up any black and white outfit, and gives sizzle to browns. THE LONG AND SHORT OF PROM

Now that you've made your Prom budget, (see last month's blogs), it's time to start zeroing in on what you'd like to wear. There are so many options, how do you choose between a long gown or a short dress for Prom?????? A print or solid???? And what color to pick?????

Start by flipping through the Prom mags, and ripping out photos of dresses you like. If it's Junior Prom, and you have great legs, short is definitely OK. If it's Senior Prom, long is probably a better choice, as for important social rites of passage nothing beats a long dress for glamour, and it's probably the last time you get to wear one before you get married! Short might be a good decision if you don't have a date, and are going in a girl's limo as well. A short dress can probably be worn again, but keep in mind that for Prom it should have a little extra bling!

If you are petite, a high/low hem might be a good compromise. Many of the long gowns have trains, so don't be afraid to hem those off, even if you are tall, but worried about dancing and tripping all night long.

Style-wise, think about a halter if you are a little bustier, it will give you better support. Strapless is OK too, as most dresses come with optional straps that can be pinned in after photos for support while dancing and dining. If hips or thighs are your problem, go for a skirt bottom with a little swing to it, not poufy, just A-line so it skims the hips. If you are thin, you can go for trumpet bottom hems, tiers, and ruffles galore, but avoid these at all costs if you carry your weight below the waist. If you are thin you can choose a clingy jersey knit, or charmeuse, but otherwise look for chiffon, it is forgiving. Crystal pleating is popular in both short and long dresses this year, and it works for all figure types.

Prints are a hot trend in Prom, but can be overwhelming for some. If florals are not your thing, try a geometric, or a black & white color contrast. If you prefer a solid color, jewel tones like ruby, emerald, and sapphire are popular again, and a nice change from baby pink & baby blue. Turn to aqua or turquoise, fushcia or melon. Think of the theme of the Prom, but don't try to match the decorations. Purple is hard to wear even if the theme is "Mardi Gras". Keep in mind your skin type and hair color, that is more important. If you are pale, don't wear too dark or too light a color. Red looks good whether you are a blonde or brunette. Redheads shy away from pink please, blue, aqua, turq is the way for you. White is often saved for Seniors at some schools. Gold or silver metallic fabrics are very fashionable for Prom as well this year, so give them a try, just keep the gown style simple.

Countdown to Prom continues......

Now that you have begun work on your Prom budget, and have begun counting your $$$$$$, it's now time to take inventory of yourself, and decide if it's time to start counting calories as well! You have about two months left until April, so decide what it is about yourself that you want to fix by Prom time. Is it your waistline, your complexion, your haircolor?

Well, now is the time to make a plan: Count your carbs, and start to exercise. Your perfect figure may just be a few bike rides away, or attainable with just a few less pizzas consumed. Doctor your derma, if blemishes are a problem, check with a dermatologist, to see what treatments are available and covered by your insurance. Lots of times over the counter remedies are not enough, & a simple Rx can get the problem cleared up in a matter of weeks. Holler to your hairdresser, if your tresses are damaged, discolored, or you are thinking about extentions. Miracles don't happen overnight, but good conditioning over a few weeks can work wonders.

Creating Your Prom 2008 Budget

This exercise is going to help make your Prom dreams a reality! Even if you're too pretty to do math, simply put, a Prom budget is a financial guide that outlines what you can afford to spend on individual items, and shows where the money for those items is coming from.

FIRST: Write down on a sheet of paper what your "Prom income" will be over the next 3 months from babysitting, that after-school or weekend job, your allowance, and whatever $$$$$ Mom or Dad (and Grandma) are willing to kick in for expenses.

SECOND: On another sheet of paper, figure out all the items you will need to put your Prom outfit together, and assign each one an approximate cost. Be really specific and make sure the list includes not only $$$ for your dress or gown, but shoes, bag, jewelry, hair, make-up etc.

THIRD: List all the items you'll be expected to chip in for like tickets, flowers, limo, dinner, pre-party or after-party food, photos, etc.

LAST: See what $$$$ you are missing!!!! The Prom income has to add up to the Prom expenses. If they don't, start getting creative and figure out where you can save money.

Most girls will spend $550 to $750 on Prom, but you can do your own hair and make-up. Paint your own nails and toes. Borrow jewelry and shoes, or a handbag from mom or your sister. Sometimes your date will pay for the ticket, limo and flowers. Check with him ahead of time to see what expenses he'll cover.

Most importantly, be realistic and know what you can afford. Start shopping for your gown and looking for limo deals early, otherwise, if you wait till the last minute, you always wind up spending more.

Three Month Countdown to Prom 2008

LET THE DAYDREAMS BEGIN! From finding the perfect dress to hiring a limo, there's a lot to do before Prom night. But, first things first: make a budget for yourself and start saving! Stash the cash from your after school job or babysitting assignments, it's the first step to making your dreams a reality.

Make a Prom notebook and fill it with clippings of your favorite dresses and gowns from magazines like "Seventeen Prom" & "Your Prom". Check out websites like shopfashionqueen.com that feature gowns from several manufacturers, and find the company that creates with your figure, and your style in mind.

Turn your crush into your date if you don't already have a steady boyfriend, and then begin planning which group of friends you'll meet up with for pre-Prom and post-Prom parties. If you're doing a "girls only"
